Rapids Drought Over
COLUMBUS, OH. - The Colorado Rapids ended their 4 game winless streak with a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew last night.

Both teams came into the match searching for much needed points to improve their standings in the tables. Colorado sat at the bottom of the West Conference tables with 12 points. Columbus had 15 points and was just 1 point shy of 3rd place in the East.

The Crew last match resulted in a convincing 3-1 win over the Chicago Fire. The Rapids, in contrast, suffered a disappointing draw at home against the Dallas Burn in their last match.

The match began with good opportunities for both sides. Columbus keeper Jon Busch saved and early shot from Rapids midfielder Seth Trembly. Jeff Cunningham had two close chances for the Crew the resulted just wide of the goal.

The first goal of the match came in the 37th minute at the hands of Rapids striker Jean-Philippe Peguero. The Haitian international fought off two defenders and struck the ball past the keeper, netting his 4th goal of the season.

Colorado's lead would extend in the late moments of the first half. Crew defender Eric Denton accidentally deflected a cross into his own net. The own goal in the 45th minute would give the Rapids the lead at the half 2-0.

Columbus had the most dangerous chances of the second half. Including chances from Cunningham and Chad Marshall.

Edson Buddle found the net for Columbus late. The striker ended any chance of a clean sheet for Rapids keeper Joe Cannon. The Crew's only tally of the game came in the 89th minute.

Columbus had a chance to tie the game in stoppage time, but Chris Henderson proved the hero for Colorado by clearing a Chad Marshall header off the goal line.

6 yellow cards were issued in game, including 3 to Rapids players for delaying a restart.

The match ended with final of 2-1. The Rapids secured the win to end their winless skid of 4 games. Colorado next match will be on Wednesday night against the MetroStars. The game kickoff at 5 p.m. MT.
