Rumor Update: 8/17
So, Sigi Schmid leads the Galaxy to three championships and once again takes them to first place. The thanks he gets? Being told he’s fired by general manager Doug Hamilton, who fans across the league are now calling incompetent. After keeping him through a poor season last year, you’d think they wouldn’t fire him for one bad month. Rumors are several arguments may have taken place between Schmid and Hamilton. Anyways, on to the topics of Schmid’s future and his replacement. Now looking for a job, Schmid is a prime candidate for both Chivas USA and Utah, but are those the only possibilities? Colorado may be close to letting go Tim Hankinson and Chicago can’t be too far from considering Dave Sarachan’s future. I’d bet on Schmid finding a job in MLS by the end of season whether it’s with SLC, Chivas USA or another club. As far as the open Galaxy job, it seems very likely Hamilton had a replacement ready before he dumped Schmid and Steve Sampson is the first to come to mind. Sampson has many ties in the Los Angeles area and Hamilton may have made this move to secure Sampson before Utah, Chivas USA or someone else did. Sure there are other possibilities, but Sampson definitely seems the most likely.

Tony Sanneh, out of contract with his club Nurnberg in Germany and rumors had it that he was heading to MLS, possibly to the Metrostars. Reports in several English newspapers claim according to Sanneh’s agent he is in talks with Coventry City of the English Coca-Cola Championship. Talks seem to be serious and it sounds likely Sanneh will end up there. If this happens and seems unlikely the aging defender will ever end up in MLS.

Club America has definitely expressed interest in buying the San Jose Earthquakes and relocating to Houston. The question is how far have talks gone? The San Antonio Express goes as far as saying the Earthquakes are “probably headed for Houston”. ESPN Soccernet claims, “The San Jose Earthquakes are close to being officially sold to Mexico's Club America”. It’s even been enough for San Jose fans to hold rallies in support of their team. It appears unless a new stadium situation can be found in the very near future this deal is everything, but definite. The question is will this team be made into a Spanish speaking team like Chivas USA is expected to be? If this is the case what is to happed to all of San Jose’s players? What about Landon Donovan? It appears Donovan may wish to stay in MLS with the Earthquakes instead of going to Germany, but it seems unlikely he will stay if his club is moved to Houston. Will MLS being willing to risk losing more money in San Jose to keep their poster boy? Probably not. Donovan could very well be out of MLS after this season with his loan expiring before the start of the 2005 season.
