Revs push back into play-off picture with 2-0 win over Dallas
FOXBORO, MA. – With just two games left in the season the Revs (7-12-9) are on the outside looking into te playoff picture, but their destiny is now in their own hands. Their win against Dallas combined with a Chicago Fire tie puts the Revolution just three points back of Chicago with 2 games remaining, one against the Fire. New England and Dallas (10-13-5) both entered the match at the bottom of the East and West Conferences, respectively, with the Revs trying to qualify for their third straight playoffs and the Burn trying to avoid missing the playoffs for the second straight year.

The Revs almost fell behind in just the second minute when Eddie Johnson sent a pass to Eric Quill in the left side of the box. Quill’s shot from close range was stopped by a charging Matt Reis.

The Dallas defense gifted the Revolution a great chance in the 21st minute, when Carey Talley sent a poor pass right to Pat Noonan at the top of the box. Noonan’s hard shot was saved by a diving Scott Garlick.

The Revs had another good chance in the 38th minute, when Noonan sent a ball from the endline back to Jose Cancela. Cancela’s shot was right at Garlick.

Marshall Leonard set up two chances a minute apart, one resulting in a goal. First Leonard sent a long lob to Noonan, who saw his shot saved by Garlick in the 41st minute. A minute later his cross from 40 yards out connected with the head of a loosely marked Taylor Twellman and was redirected past Garlick for Leonard’s first career MLS assist.

Less than two minutes into the second half the Revolution doubled their lead. Noonan, the league’s leading scorer, sent a pass to Jose Cancela, who was making his first start in over a month. Cancela sent a cross into the box that captain Steve Ralston headed home for his 6th goal of the year.

Noonan played a pass to Twellman in the 59th minute that was dummied by Cancela before Twellman sent a hard shot on target. His shot however, was easily saved by Garlick. Four minutes later Twellman was called offsides on a potential breakaway. Replays showed Twellman to have been onside by at least a couple of yards.

Dallas were lucky to get out of the match without seeing any of their players ejected. In first half stoppage time Carey Talley received a yellow card for pulling down Brian Kamler. Seconds later he hit Marshall Leonard in the neck off the ball, but didn’t receive a card. In the last minute of stoppage time Corey Gibbs was lucky to get away with just a yellow for his reckless tackle from behind on Andy Dorman.

"It was a good solid team performance from the start to the end,” said Head Coach Steve Nicol after the match. “We defended when we had to, obviously we got the goals but we made some other chances. It was a real good solid team performance."

The Revs next travel to D.C. to face D.C. United. The match can be seen live at 7:30PM on Fox Sports New England.
