US start final round of World Cup Qualification with a win on the road
The U.S. Menís National Soccer Team went into Port of Spain, Trinidad after a shortened training camp due to a labor dispute and managed to get a crucial three points on the road to start the final round of World Cup Qualifying. Led by 20 year-old Eddie Johnson and veteran Eddie Lewisí goals along with some great saves from Kasey Keller, the U.S. held off a Trinidad and Tobago attack led by Dwight Yorke and Stern John, two forwards with English Premier League experience.

Trinidad and Tobago got off to a good start creating a few chances and keeping the U.S. at bay, but after the first 15 minutes the US took control. In the 20th minute a Pablo Mastroeni blast from around 35 yards out forced T&T goalie Shaka Hislop into a save.

The U.S. took the lead in the 30th minute when Eddie Johnson headed home a Steve Cherundolo cross for his 6th international goal in just four games. Johnson became the first player in U.S. National Team history to score in his first 4 games and tied two others for the longest goal-scoring streak in the history of the team. His 6 goals, all in World Cup Qualifying, put him 3rd in the U.S.ís All-Time list for that as well.

Four minutes later T&T forced Keller into a save with a powerful header by Stern John.

The U.S. nearly doubled their lead 7 minutes after half time when a nice play by Johnson left Landon Donovan with the ball near the penalty spot. Hislop, however, saved his shot.

T&T immediately sparked a counter-attack, but Keller made a spectacular save on a Leslie Fitzpatrick breakaway.

2 minutes later, the U.S. scored the game winner, when Eddie Lewis hit a rocket from 23 yards out that just went inside the right post.

New England Revolution midfielder and MLS Rookie of the Year, Clint Dempsey, entered the game in the 66th minute for Pablo Mastroeni, earning just his second international appearance. Taylor Twellman also made the final squad, but did not come off the bench. Pat Noonan and Steve Raslton were called into the training camp, but didnít make the final cut.

T&Tís next chance came in the 74th minute on a shot from Cornell Glenn, but Keller was there to make the save.

T&T came back within one in the 89th minute, when Keller ended up misjudging an Angus
Eve cross and knocking it into his own net.

The U.S. next heads to Mexico to take on the Mexican National Team on March 27th. The U.S. has never won in Mexico, where they have lost 21 of 22 games
