First Place Revolution extinguish Fire, get another win on the road
Chicago, IL. –The New England Revolution established themselves as the early front-runners in the Eastern Conference with a 3-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday, April 27th. The win puts the Revs 3 points ahead of the Fire in the standings, having played one less game. Taylor Twellman, Clint Dempsey and Pat Noonan all scored in the game and all three currently sit atop the MLS goal scoring chart with 3 goals. Twellman’s goal marked his 50th career MLS goal.

The Revs took control in the first half and in just the 5th minute Pat Noonan saw his shot bounce off of the right post. Nine minutes later, he saw a shot saved by Fire goalie Zach Thornton.

Clint Dempsey gave the Revs the lead in the 33rd minute. Shalrie Joseph sent a pass into the box to Dempsey, who was closely covered by the Fire defense. Dempsey flicked the ball into the air, then ran onto it and volleyed into the top corner of the net. The goal proved to be the game winner, Dempsey’s third in a row.

Pat Noonan doubled the lead nine minutes later, when rookie James Riley’s cross through the goal box found Noonan. Noonan turned and shot into the far corner of the net for his third goal of the year.

The Fire took control of the match in the second half, but the Revs defense, led by rookie Michael Parkhurst, looked very comfortable. Chicago managed to get off 17 shots in the game, but only put 3 on target.

Rookie James Riley was forced to leave the game in the 85th minute with a hamstring strain and was replaced by second year player Luke Vercollone.

Deep into stoppage time, Taylor Twellman put the game out of reach. Twellman dribbled the ball about 50 yards on an amazing run before sending a shot past Zach Thornton to finish off the scoring.

"We were up 2-0 at halftime and we were definitely a better team in the first half. I think the second half was crappy, to say the least,” Head Coach Steve Nicol said to after the match. “It's nice to get that third goal and kill them off, albeit with 30 seconds to go, but again, congratulations to Taylor [Twellman] for getting his 50th goal."

The win leaves the undefeated Revs in first place with a 3-0-1 record and a three game winning streak. The Revs next face Chivas USA on Saturday, April 30th at 7:30PM at Gillette Stadium. The game can be seen live on Fox Soccer Channel and WB56.
