Revolution fall in 5-4 thriller against the Metrostars
East Rutherford, NJ. – The New England Revolution lost in their first chance to clinch a playoff spot in a 5-4 loss to the 5th place Metrostars. The Revs fell behind early, but came back and took the lead at 4-3, before giving up two late goals. The loss marks the first time the Revs have given up more than three goals all season.

The Metrostars took an early lead in the 7th minute, when Mike Magee chested down a Your Djorkaeff cross and blasted it past goalie Matt Reis and into the net.

The Revs tied it in the 29th minute, when midfielder Shalrie Joseph sent home a Joe Franchino free kick with a powerful header.

The Metrostars took back the lead in the 51st minute, when Amado Guevara sprung Djorkaeff free of the Revs defense. With the Revs defenders looking for an offside call, Djorkaeff took the ball around an onrushing Matt Reis and slotted it into the empty net.

Amado Guevara doubled the lead eight minutes later, when he sent home a Tim Ward cross on another goal that had a hint of possibly being offside.

The Revs pulled one back just two minutes later, when Shalrie Joseph picked up the scraps on a goal mouth scramble and headed the rebound of a Steve Ralston shot into the net.

Cint Dempsey scored the equalizer ten minutes later, when Tony Meola couldn’t keep hold of a Taylor Twellman shot. Dempsey slid in and tapped the ball into the back of the net.

Twellman then gave the Revs the lead in the 73rd minute, when Shalrie Joseph curled a perfect pass around the Metrostars defense in front of Twellman, who slotted it home for his league-leading 15th goal of the season.

The Metrostars struck back two minutes later, when Mike Magee beat Michael Parkhurst and got on the end of a perfect pass from Michael Bradley. Magee’s shot left Reis with no chance.

Youri Djorkeaff scored the game winner in the 86th minute from an awkward angle. Djorkeaff caught Matt Reis cheating out expecting a cross and sent in a shot on target. Reis dove back to save it, but only succeeded in pushing it into the net.

Despite the loss the Revs remain in first place in the Eastern Conference, but are now 2 points out of first place overall in the league. The Revs travel to Columbus to face the Crew on Wednesday at 7:30PM ET.
