Ten-man Wizards deal Rapids first loss
|
After loosing Jose Burciaga Jr. to a red card early in the second half, the Ten-man Wizard’s squad earned goals from Chris Klein in the 64th and Josh Wolff in the 84th to defeat the Colorado Rapids at Arrowhead Stadium in front of 24,740 fans. Wizard’s Goalkeeper Tony Meola also earned his MLS-leading 51st shut out after having only allowed one goal throughout the season.
The Wizards dominated the first half, but in the 44th minute suffered a blow as Jose Burciaga Jr. was shown a red for elbowing Matt Crawford while the two fought for a ball in the air.
Despite the loss, the Wizards battled on and found net in the 64th. A long ball from the back found Davy Arnaud, who at that point was the only member of the Wizards to have scored a goal. Arnaud attracted several defenders, leaving Chris Klein alone at the top of the box to receive his pass and Klein shot the ball past goalkeeper Joe Cannon after it deflected off one of his defenders.
The Wizards were able to seal the match 20 minutes later. Left back Diego Gutierrez was able to make a spectacular run and beat several Colorado players and play a long ball to Josh Wolff. Wolff was able to draw Cannon off his line and easily put the ball in net for his first of the season.
Both teams were without several key players due to injuries. The Wizards will be without play makers Preki and Igor Simutenkov until July and defender Nick Garcia is out with an inflamed right foot. The Rapids were missing captain John Spencer, Darryl Powell, and Zizi Roberts.
Both teams return to action next week as the Wizards take on the Chicago Fire at home at 7:30 CT and the Rapids host New England Friday at 8:30 ET. With the win, the Wizards move to 2-1-1 and hand the Rapids their first loss, making them 1-1-2.
Pablo Mastroeni, Nat Borchers, Kyle Beckerman, Antonio De la Torre, and Joe Cannon prepare to take the field before the match.
