It would be cliche, and perhaps misplaced hyperbole, to compare this season's New York Red Bulls to A Tale of Two Cities.
Either it's very early in the regular season, or the regular season doesn't mean anything at all. Whatever the reason, the most hardened cynics of Major League Soccer and the New York Red Bulls take the team's early success with a grain of salt.

Among the New York faithful, however, there is reason to be optimistic, if not celebratory. A minor misstep in Columbus during opening weekend was quickly brushed aside by a series of wins throughout April that propelled the Red Bulls to the top of the Eastern Conference, the top of the entire league, and an impressive ten-point lead over perennial rivals DC United, who occupy the cellar of the conference with expansion Toronto FC after three straight losses to open the season.

From what I know about people and what I know about sports, a simple game of football can never be assumed to be played fair when there are such high stakes involved. This is especially true when it comes to the world stage and World Cup. This past Saturday many witnessed two games of this spectacular event which epitomises the reason why they instigated “fairplay”. The USA managed only a single point in group play, losing to the Czech Republic, tying Italy and ending with a loss to Ghana. Going into the World Cup, the Czech Republic and Italy looked to be the favorites to advance with the USA as firm challengers and Ghana the unknown quantity.
On January 27th, favorite for fans of both the U.S. National Team and New England Revolution, Joe-Max Moore decided to hang up his cleats. The third all time leading scorer in the history of the U.S. National Team and the all-time scorer in the history of the Revolution made the decision to retire after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his knee. The 33 year old had earned the reputation at both the national and club level as a fierce competitor, who would never give anything less than his all. This is what made him a fan favorite in New England and the rest of the U.S. and this was why he is the favorite player for so many American soccer fans, including myself.

The team that lost 156 man games to injury last year, the most in league history, and was unable to field a full bench for much of the season now must acquire even more depth during the offseason if they want to be challengers for the cup. United, it would be enough to make the 58th pick in this year’s Major League Soccer SuperDraft more valuable than dozens of the picks before him who have yet to see significant playing time or never even signed with their clubs. Dorman has been a hero in recent weeks for the Revs as a late game substitute. Coming on as an 83rd minute substitute against Dallas on August 11th, Dorman recorded his first goal and first assist of the season, adding insurance to a one goal Revs lead that seemed destined to be erased from all of Dallas’ offensive pressure until Dorman came on. Three days later on August 14th, Dorman proved hero again, coming on in the 85th minute and scoring the game-tying goal seconds later. The Flintshire, Wales native has played in 16 games, but averages only just over 21 minutes of playing time during those games for a total of 277 minutes. Dorman’s two starts came back when the Revs were struggling with injuries and his recent good form hasn’t increased his playing time as he came in for the Revs in the 81st minute on August 21st against Kansas City.

FOXBORO, MA. – A 16 to 8 advantage in shots was not enough for the New England Revolution (5-9-8) to get anything out of a vital match against the Kansas City Wizards (10-7-5). An early Taylor Twellman goal was not a sufficient lead for the Revs as their record when scoring the first goal (4-2-5) is now the worst in the league. Poor finishing and poor organization that seemed to be getting better during the Revs’ recent run could once again be blamed for the Revs loss. The Revs got what should’ve been good news before the match when they found out Tony Meola, who currently has the best goals against average in the league, had injured his right Achilles in a pre-game jog. Meola’s back-up Bo Oshoniyi, however, played so well he earned Man of the Match honors.

Pat Noonan gave the Revs the early lead with Taylor Twellman and Andy Dorman adding late insurance goals.	The Revs took the lead in just the third minute. After earning a free kick about 30 yards out from goal on the right flank, Jose Cancela quickly sent a pass to Steve Ralston, catching the Burn off guard. Ralston got to the end line before sending the ball across the 6-yard box, past goalie Jeff Cassar. Noonan slid in to easily redirect the ball into the empty net.

Wynalda still had it in him, not to mention the wonderful work of those Salvadoreans: Raul Diaz-Arce and the little big talent of Mauricio Cienfuegos. Not to leave behind Hugo Perez who also scored in this wonderful event.
Washington D.C. - The West may be the stronger conference in MLS, but they still have trouble beating the East when it comes to the All-Star game. After two years of trying out different formats for the All-Star game, it finally returned to the Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference format and the Eastern Conference wasted no time and continuing their All-Star game dominance to improve to 4-1-1 in all games played in an East vs. West format. Prior to the East’s 3-2 defeat of the West, a 50 minute legends match took place in which the U.S. Legends, comprised mostly of Americans who played on the ‘94 World Cup team and went on to play in MLS, tied the World Legends, comprised of past foreign stars who played in MLS in an exciting 2-2 draw.

Despite dominating, Revs come away with another loss

DENVER, CO. – A soccer game can’t be won if a team doesn’t take advantage of it’s chances and the New England Revolution proved that on July 4th, losing to Colorado 1-0 despite creating the majority of good opportunities and dominating the possession. After seeing Colorado goalkeeper Joe Cannon earn Man of the Match for his several great saves to deny the Revs from scoring, opposing goalkeepers have now earned Man of the Match 5 times in the Revs 8 losses. The losses can’t just be blamed on good goalkeeping however, as the Revs certainly haven’t helped their cause by some very poor shot placement. Just like in the other losses, the Revs helped the goalie out by sending several point blank shots directly at him. Now with a 3-8-3 record and two games out of a playoff spot again, the Revs head into the away leg of a home and away series with the Chicago Fire that could see the Revs either leap frog the Fire into fourth or fall much deeper into last place.

The eighth pick of the 2004 Major League Soccer SuperDraft has earned a starting spot in the New England Revolution’s line-up and is considered by many the early favorite for rookie of the year. Clint Dempsey is currently second on the Revs in scoring with 4 goals and is one of only three players to have played in all 13 of the Revolution’s matches this season. The rookie midfielder/forward is only the third player in team history to earn a starting spot in his first or second game and leads all of the top ten picks from this year’s SuperDraft in minutes played. Dempsey comes into Sunday’s match against Colorado with a three game goal-scoring streak despite playing both forward and defensive midfield in different games during that stretch. With stats like this it’s easy to see why the 21 year old from Nacogdoches, Texas is attracting so much attention from media and fans.
