Revs upset Metrostars, 2-1
FOXBORO, MA. - The last place New England Revolution (3-7-3) upset the first place Metrostars (5-4-4), despite missing many starters to injury. With the win, the Revs have gone 10 MLS games unbeaten against the Metrostars including the playoffs. Rookies Clint Dempsey and Felix Brillant provided the goals for the Revs, while great saves from both Adin Brown and Matt Reis kept the Metrostars from scoring until the 90th minute.

The first half was pretty even with each side seeing 8 shots and putting 4 of them on net. The Revs had some of the better chances, however, and may have scored in the 10th minute if it wasn’t for smart play by Metrostars goalie Jonny Walker. Pat Noonan sent a through ball to Felix Brillant, who was clear through on goal. Walker was quick off his line to cut down the angle and Brillant’s shot deflected off Walker and went out of bounds for a corner kick. Nine minutes later, Jeff Parke managed to stop Pat Noonan on a breakaway by catching up to him and sliding in to knock the ball out of bounds.

The injury curse hit the Revs again in the 17th minute when goalkeeper Adin Brown made a great diving save on a Jeff Parke header off a corner kick. Joey Franchino was standing at the post for the corner and Brown’s head hit Franchino’s knee. Brown stayed in for the rest of the half making spectacular diving saves on Ricardo Clark and Eddie Pope in the 27th and 45th minute. Matt Reis replaced Brown at half time. Head Coach Steve Nicol said after the game, “He had a concussion. He was bloody and nauseous, so the doc said at half-time he had to come off.” Brown joined Carlos Llamosa (left knee sprain), Joe-Max Moore (right knee sprain), Rusty Pierce (right quadriceps contusion), Shalrie Joseph (hip flexor/left quadriceps), Brian Kamler (left hamstring), Andy Dorman (left hamstring), Taylor Twellman (right hamstring) on the injured list. The only available Revs substitutes for the match were Reis, Daouda Kante and Luke Vercollone.

The Metrostars saw a player go down to injury as well in the first half, after Clint Dempsey slid in on a very late and dangerous tackle on midfielder Gilberto Flores. Flores left on a stretcher and was replaced by Pablo Brenes three minutes later. Brenes was taken to the hospital for X-rays and Dempsey received a yellow card for the tackle.

In the 51st minute, Eddie Gaven blew a great chance for the Metrostars when he received a cross from John Wolyniec about 10 yards out from goal. Despite being unmarked and clear through on goal, Gaven somehow managed to shoot well high of the net.

Matt Reis made a great save in the 60th minute, when he made diving save on a Mike Magee header destined for the upper right corner of the net. On the ensuing counter-attack Steve Ralston sent a shot just wide of the upper right corner.

Dempsey and Richie Baker almost linked up in a chance that looked very similar to the one in which Dempsey headed home a Baker cross last week. Baker’s cross this time, however, was just out of the reach of a diving Dempsey.

The Revs took the lead in the 64th minute, when Pat Noonan was shoved off of a through ball by a Metrostars defender. Felix Brillant used his speed to get to the ball and dribbled past three Metrostars defenders, all attempting to push him over, and managed to send a shot into the lower right corner of the net that just beat Walker for his first ever MLS goal, before finally falling.

Just three minutes later, Clint Dempsey doubled the lead when Pat Noonan sent him a through ball. Dempsey also dribbled past three defenders and Walker before sending a shot into the empty net for the fourth goal of his rookie campaign. Dempsey jumped into “The Fort” of Revolution supporters to celebrate his goal.

Matt Reis kept the match scoreless until the 90th minute, making saves on Mike Magee in the 64th minute, Ricardo Clark in the 71st minute, and another in the 75th minute. Reis was finally beaten in the 90th minute after referee Ramon Hernandez signaled for a very questionable penalty kick. Mike Magee settled a long ball in the Revolution penalty area and as he tried to dribble around Reis was taken down. On replays it seemed that Reis got the ball first and therefore, if anything, Magee fouled Reis. Hernandez, despite being in a horrible position to see the supposed “foul” called for a penalty kick without consulting his assistant referee, who had a much better view and did not flag for a foul. After a long argument between Reis and Hernandez for which Reis somehow managed to escape without a card despite forcing the penalty kick to be taken twice, Amado Guevara took the penalty kick and sent it just under Reis’ dive to his right.

The match ended at 2-1 and the Revs escaped with their first win since June 2nd. The Revs next travel to Denver to face the Colorado Rapids on Sunday July 4th at 9:30 ET. The match can be seen live on Fox Sports Net New England.
