Rapids beat Metros Late 3-2
East Rutherford, NJ. - The Colorado Rapids upset the NY/NJ MetroStars in a late goal thriller at Giants Stadium in front of crowd of 41,013.

Rookie forward Jordan Cila netted two goals including the match winner. The young-gun was the first Rapids player of the season to score twice in a game. The match was also the MLS debut of Cuban forward Alberto Delgado, whom had signed with the club just hours before kickoff.

The match began at a fast pace with both teams getting early chances. The scoring started early in the 13th minute. Delgado dribbled around two defenders and sent in a low cross to Cila. He then volleyed the ball past MetroStars goalkeeper Johnny Walker. Delgado recorded his first MLS point with the assist and Cila recorded his first goal in the MLS.

After the opening mark, the flow of the game switched in favor of the MetroStars as they controlled the pace and possession.

The MetroStars responded ten minutes later in the 23rd. Joselito Vaca hit a cross to Eddie Gaven who headed the ball just past Rapids keeper Joe Cannon.

The score at the half stood at 1-1.

The home side would take the lead shortly after in the beginning of the second half in the 53rd minute. Amado Guevara of the MetroStars played a corner kick to Jeff Parke who the used his head to flick the ball on to Galvan Rey who simply taped the ball into the goal. The score was Rey's first in the MLS.

The MetroStars controlled the possession for most of the half and nearly added a third goal, but keeper Joe Cannon's intervention kept the Rapids in the game. Ritchie Kotschau was subbed off in the 69th minute after receiving an elbow to the head.

The flow of the match changed dramatically in the final 15 minutes. Colorado began to play with much more urgency. The created more chances and dominated the possession.

The Rapids equalizer came in the 78th minute. Defender Nat Borchers hit a powerful "one-time" volley past Walker into the back of the net. The goal was Nat's second career talley.

Colorado continued to push forward and create the more dangerous chances. Their late efforts paid off in the 89th minute. Antonio de la Torre swung in a corner that found the head of Borchers. He then headed the ball down to find Jordan Cila. The rookie spun around on the ground and swept the ball into the net. The Rapids took the late lead 3-2.

Colorado's defense locked down and held off the MetroStars through over 5 minutes of stoppage time. The final wistle came, giving the Rapids the victory.

Colorado's second consecutive win gave them a boost in the standings as they leapfrogged Dallas and San Jose to 3rd place in the West.

Despite the loss, the MetroStars remain at the top of the Eastern Conference with 19 points.

Colorado will host the New England Revolution in their next match. The game is scheduled for July 4th, kickoff is at 7:30 PM (MT)

The MetroStars next match is against DC United, July 3rd, 5:00 PM (ET).
