Revs fail to hold early lead against Crew, tie 1-1
COLUMBUS, OH. – The Revolution (4-8-5) took a 31st minute lead courtesy of Clint Dempsey, but failed to hold onto it and ended up with a 1-1 tie leaving Columbus. After losing the first two games of the season series with the Crew (5-5-5) in dramatic fashion, the Revs came out fired up and looking for a win. They used this to dominate the possession and chances in the first half, but fatigue from 3 matches in 6 days seemed to hit in the second half as the Crew controlled most of the possession from then on.

Man of the Match, Richie Baker created most of the Revs’ first half opportunities, including a cross in the 6th minute that Pat Noonan headed on target, forcing goalie Jon Busch into a save. Six minutes later, Busch was forced to save an 18-yard volley from Jose Cancela. Busch also denied Pat Noonan in the 24th minute, when Noonan received a perfect pass from Shalrie Joseph before sending a hard shot on target, forcing Busch into another leaping save.

The Revs finally broke through in the 31st minute, when Baker found Clint Dempsey with a cross. Dempsey shrugged off three defenders while dribbling through the box, before sending a shot to Busch’s left.
Just seconds before half time, the Crew tied the match against the run of play, when Jeff Cunningham sent a through ball to Kyle Martino. Martino sent a shot across the 6-yard box towards the far side of the net that was just out of reach of an outstretched Matt Reis.

Columbus had the majority of chances in the second half, but the Revs started to push for an equalizer in the last ten minutes and created some chances, including a cross late in the game that Busch failed to hold on to. Dempsey ran on as the ball fell loose, but as he slid in to try to redirect the ball into the open net, three Crew defenders converged and forced him to kick the ball out of bounds.

The Revs next face the Rochester Raging Rhinos (A-League, Div II) in US Open Cup action on Tuesday, July 20th in Ludlow, Massachusetts at Lusitano Stadium. They thesn travel to San Jose to take on the Earthquakes on Saturday, July 24th at 10:00PM ET, looking for a win and a loss by either the Fire or Crew to get into the 4th and last Eastern Conference playoff spot.
