Revs deadlock Crew at two
FOXBORO, MA. – The New England Revolution (4-8-7) came from behind twice to tie the Columbus Crew (6-5-7) on August 7th. With the draw, the Revs move into a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East with the Chicago Fire. Despite leading in almost every offensive statistic, including a fifteen to eight advantage in shots and an eight to four advantage in shots on goal, the Revs trailed twice and could never find an advantage in the one statistic that matters, goals. The tie extends the Crew’s unbeaten streak to 6 games and the Revs’ unbeaten streak to 5 games.

The Crew took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to a misplayed free kick by Jay Heaps. Kyle Martino intercepted Heaps pass intended for Steve Ralston and immediately got past Heaps and Ralston before sending in a shot from just outside the box to Matt Reis’ right.

The Revs tied the game in the 29th minute after they earned a penalty kick when Taylor Twellman ran onto a Cancela through ball in the box. Columbus goalie Jon Busch ran out and went for the ball, but instead got Twellman in the back of the head and the referee pointed to the spot. Steve Ralston took the penalty sending it into the upper right corner as Jon Busch dove the opposite way.

The Crew took back the lead in stoppage time of the first half on a questionable free kick. As Steve Ralston was chasing a Crew forward down the left flank, both shoving each other, the Crew player fell and the referee awarded a free kick. Ralston also received a yellow card. Simon Elliot took the free kick from about 40 yards out, sending it into the box and onto the head of Edson Buddle, who redirected it to the lower right corner. Revs goalie Matt Reis got a hand on it, but it wasn’t enough to prevent it from crossing the line.

The Revs replied seconds later, when Jose Cancela sent a cross into the box from a free kick about 25 yards out. Pat Noonan got on the end of it and sent it into the lower left corner.

The best chance of the second half came in the 80th minute for the Crew, when Kyle Martino found Frankie Hejduk unmarked in front of goal. Hejduk, however, managed to send the ball well wide of goal.

Rusty Pierce came on in the 77th minute for Brian Kamler, making his first appearance since suffering from a thigh contusion he received in the second game of the season. Joe Franchino also logged his 10,000th minute as a Rev during the match. 17 year-old Danny Szetela made his professional debut for the Crew in the 85th minute.

The Revs next head to Dallas on August 11th to face the Burn. The match can be seen live at 8:00PM ET on Fox Sports Net New England.
