Rapids Weekly Report: Blah!
It has defiantly not been an enjoyable week for the Colorado Rapids and their supporters alike. This past week has brought two appalling performances from a team that seems to have a lot of problems.

Their was a great amount of optimism for the Rapids coming off the All-Star break. The previous week they had convincingly defeated the Chicago Fire 2-0. In that match, the Rapids played a very exiting game of footy. They created opportunities, all of the passes were good, and the defense was strong.

The two following games, however, were in dramatic contrast. As black is to white. The past two games featured a completely different team from the Fire match. This Rapids team was slow, disorganized, and unmotivated.

The first of these post All-Star matches was a road trip to Dallas to take on the Burn. The first half of this match was much like most of the Rapids games this year. Play was casual and uneventful. The half time score was 0-0. The second half proved to be as miserable as a root canal. Burn player Simo Valakari received a red card in the 57th minute. Surly this would give Colorado the edge. It did not. The game seemed unchanged by the ejection. It was almost as if Dallas was not missing a player at all. A second Burn player, Brad Davis, was sent off in the 72nd minute. Perhaps the Rapids could capitalize with a two-man advantage. They could not. The Rapids had a 11-10 advantage for 15 minutes, then a 11-9 advantage for no less than 20 minutes. They did not score once. They did however manage to get scored on. The Burn were awarded a penalty kick in stoppage time. Eddie Johnson put the ball past Joe Cannon. Dallas defeated the Colorado Rapids despite having less men for nearly 35 minutes. This game had to be the worst match the Rapids have ever played in club history.

The Rapids traveled to DC for their second match. Colorado suffered a less painful but more convincing loss at the hands of United. Two Rapids players managed to score, but only one went in the right net. DC United took a 2-0 lead at the half with goals from Freddy Adu and Earnie Stewart. The lead was increased in the second half when Ritchie Kotschau suffered an own goal. Colorado did manage to pull one back as John Spencer hit one home in the 73rd minute. Once again the Rapids played a very uninspired game.

What can be at blame for these awful performances? It is anybody guess, because nothing seems to work. It is most likely a collective fault by the club as a whole.

The players don't seem to play with any heart. No one seems to give 100%. They are not motivated. But there is the very notable exception of Joe Cannon, who is still playing one of the best seasons of his career, despite Colorado's record.

Coaching and management seem to also be a problem. Tim Hankinson has not been very effective as a coach. His strategies are to unusual and he doesn't seem to inspire the players. Manager Dan Counce has not been the most engaging manager this season. He has done little to try and correct the team's problems.

The third and final finger-pointing goes to the ownership. KSE has not lifted a finger toward the management or coaching to solve the current problems of the club. However, they have not owned the team for a full year. The ownership gets the most leniency for the blame because they have not had much involvement with ongoing problems.

The Colorado Rapids have many problems that need fixing. Unfortunitly most of the problems won't be comforted until the close of the season. Colorado will most likely continue their woes for the remainder of the season.

The Colorado Rapids will next try their luck at the Chicago Fire. Game time is Saturday, August 14th at 6:30 PM (MT).
