Undermanned San Jose defeats faltering Revs
FOXBORO, MA. – The New England Revolution fell to a San Jose Earthquakes squad that was missing four starters, three of which were All-Stars this year. The Revs, nearly at full strength were unable to score against San Jose’s back-up goalie, or shut down San Jose’s third and fourth string forwards. San Jose was missing forwards Brian Ching (US National Team), Landon Donovan (US National Team), Dwayne Derosario (Canada National Team), and goalie Pat Onstad (Canada National Team). Earlier in the year, the Revs traded forward Chris Brown to the Earthquakes for future considerations. So far the Revs have gotten nothing for the trade, while on the other side of the deal San Jose has gotten two goals and an assist out of Brown including a game-winner on Saturday against the Revs.

San Jose got off to a quick start and forced Matt Reis into a save in the 6th minute. Brian Mullan ran into the Revolution box, but his near post shot from about ten yards out was saved by a diving Reis.

It was end-to-end action in the 15th minute as Chris Brown’s header off a Richard Mulrooney cross went just wide of the post. Seconds later the Revs streaked down to the other end of the field only to see a Clint Dempsey shot from just outside the box saved by Jon Conway.

Eight minutes later, Twellman got free of his defenders at the top of the box and hammered a hard shot on target. Conway dove and managed to punch it away.

Twellman had another chance in the 32nd minute, when a Steve Howey free kick got to Steve Ralston at the edge of the box. Ralston sent in a cross that Twellman headed just wide of the net.

Just before half-time, Ralston sent in another accurate cross into the box that this time Pat Noonan got on the end of. The result was the same however as the header went wide of the post.

Chris Brown gave San Jose the lead in the 48th minute when he headed home a cross from close range. The unmarked Brown redirected Ian Russel’s cross to the far post away from Reis.

Steve Ralston sent a free kick into the box in the 58th minute that a diving Clint Dempsey got to, but a sprawling Conway saved his header.

Andy Dorman entered the match in the 61st minute and immediately made an impact. His shot in the 69th minute forced Conway to dive into the net and went right to Brian Kamler. Kamler’s shot hit off Conway’s foot and deflected just wide of the open net.

One minute later Ralston hooked up with Twellman again. This time his shot was on target, but right at Conway.

Richie Baker came on in the 72nd minute and quickly provided an offensive spark. In the 81st minute he ran down the right flank, only to be double-teamed and lose the ball. Baker did not give up, however, and stole the ball back, beating both defenders in the process. Baker ran to the edge of the 6-yard box, before sending a cross to Twellman that caught Conway in between and left the net wide open. Twellman’s one-time left-footed shot hit off the post and came back into play before it was cleared by San Jose.

The Revs had one last chance in the 90th minute, when Richie Baker sent a cross into the box that was headed just high by Noonan.

Yet again the Revs failed to convert upon a 9 to 3 advantage in shots in the second half. The Revs, once again mired in last place, travel to face off against the Metrostars on September 11th. The Metrostars will be missing their playmaker and the league’s leading scorer, Amado Guevara, due to suspension. The Revs desperately need a win to keep playoff hopes alive. “If anyone thinks we'll lie down and die they don't know this team,” said Head Coach Steve Nicol after the match. “This team wouldn't do that. This team will be putting in the same effort they put in tonight. I can have no complaints with the effort. People, to the end, were doing what they can to try and retrieve the situation so as far as effort's concerned we can have no complaints. Obviously, the main concern is putting the ball in the net. The only thing I can guarantee anybody who watches this team is that there won't be anyone on this team lying down or putting their head down.”
