United Makes Progress On, Off Field
When was the last time DC United fans were this optimistic about their club? Then again, when was the last time Washington DC sports fans were so optimitic in general? It appears the Peter Angelos barracade is finally coming down and baseball is moving into the nation's capital. Just in time to kick DC United out of RFK Stadium and in the process light a fire under DC Stadium authorities to get a Soccer Specific Stadium deal done. But a stadium deal might not be the only headlines DC United get this weekend.

Many people hate Major League Baseball for coming into DC because it will give DC United a headache trying to figure out where to play in 2005. I contend that baseball is actually a good thing for die-hard DC United fans. As the governor of California once said, "It's not a tumor." No United fans, it's just a temporary headache that will soon be a distant memory.

The DC United stadium process was as dead as the Anacostia River area. Rumors had always been circulating and on opening day a startling claim was made by Washington DC's mayor Anthony Williams that a stadium would be built by 2007. Really? It sounded rather bullish at the time but now things are different. MLB is almost a certainty to be playing in Washington DC next season forcing DC United to search for alternatives to RFK Stadium.

While a temporary home might be necessary, a new stadium for United is one of those alternatives. Reports have been coming steadily over the past few days about DC United developing Poplar Point on the Anacostia River. Officials say it is a complete coincidence that United's stadium could be located across from DC's baseball stadium (although they are beginning to think of ways the two can be linked). All this excitement off the field is taking away from what DC United is doing on the field.

It took almost the entire season, but DC has finally figured it out. Jaime Moreno makes play, Alecko Eskandarian finishes them, and anything else the team can do to help is icing on the cake. If I'm a United player right now, the first player I'm looking for when I touch the ball is Moreno. DC has won it's last two games by a combined score of 6-1 and Moreno has assisted on every United goal in the span. Eskandarian has accounted for half of those goals. Catching a pattern here?

When healthy the defense is up there with the best in the league. Getting a healthy Ryan Nelsen and Nick Rimando has been a huge boost for this club. The club faces a big test on Saturday as United travel to Columbus to take on the red-hot Crew. The crowd should be pumped and this should be a great match. The room on the DC United bandwagon will shrink if they could pull a victory out of this match. Great defense and hot striker could take DC to the MLS Cup. Hey, it worked for FC Porto and Monaco last year in the Champions League.

As MLS continues to build into a viable sports league with the introduction of CD Chivas USA and Salt Lake City, optimism appears all across the league. Here in Washington DC, United is making strides to pair a stadium announcement and MLS Cup for it's fans as we enter the fall.
