Galvan Rey Gives Metros Tie
The MetroStars were unable to clinch a second place spot on Saturday. They were able to hold onto second place for now, with the tie putting them one point ahead of D.C. United. The Metros tied the Columbus Crew on a Sergio Galvan Rey penalty kick after Jeff Cunningham had scored the Crew's only goal. Next week's game at D.C. will decide who gets 2nd place, the MetroStars have the advantage going in, not only will a win get them second, but so will a tie. If the MetroStars get a win or tie next week they will hold onto second place entering the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Saturday night's game started with intensity from both teams. Although no team had a great chance to score in the opening minutes, the attempts shined through. The MetroStars had most of the possession during the opening twenty minutes. They pressured right from the start, but were unable to get the first goal.

Around the 25th minute the Crew created a build up of their own. Danny Szetela and Jeff Cunningham worked magic, as a few passes led to a shot from Szetela. The shot bounced off Jeff Parke, and ended up falling into the box. Jeff Cunningham fought against Kenny Arena, and got a poke at the ball. It went over an on-rushing Jonny Walker giving the Crew the 1-0 lead.

From the start of the second half, the Metros applied pressure throughout the rest of the game. The first great chance came early in the second half off of a corner kick. Jeff Parke got his left shoulder to the ball, and it ended up coming off the far post. Had the ball been an inch closer to net the MetroStars would of found themselves tied.

In the 52nd minute Chris Leitch sent a great ball into the box, which found the head of Sergio Galvan Rey. Galvan Rey sent a header towards net but he couldn’t seem to get enough power on it. It found it's way to the corner and Crew goalkeeper Matt Jordan made an easy save.

In the 70th minute the Metros had their chance. Eddie Gaven ran into the box, and was brought down giving the MetroStars a penalty kick. With no hesitation Galvan Rey stepped up, and struck the ball into the upper right corner. Matt Jordan went the wrong way, and Galvan Rey had his second goal of the season.

Just minutes later Columbus almost took the lead when a free kick fell into the box, and scrambled it's way to Jeff Cunningham after a blocked shot that went off Ricardo Clark. Cunningham took a shot off the low volley and hit the crossbar.

In the late minutes of the match, the last chance of the game came from a MetroStars corner kick. Gaven was the one to take it, and he sent it into the box. The ball found it's way to the ground and Kenny Arena almost had his second goal of the season, but Matt Jordan came up with a big save.

The MetroStars playoffs are all in the hands of themselves when they face D.C. United next week. If the MetroStars are able to get a tie or a win in next week's match they'll have home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs. Whatever happens next game, one thing for sure is that the MetroStars will be playing D.C. United in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs.
