Revs lose two veterans to Real Salt Lake in the Expansion Draft
Foxboro, MA. Ė The New England Revolution lost starters Brian Kamler and Rusty Pierce in the expansion draft, both to Real Salt Lake. 32 year-old Kamler had been the Revolutionís starting left midfielder since midway through the 2002 season and 25-year old Rusty Pierce has been a starter, when healthy, in the Revs defense since 2000. The team that lost 156 man games to injury last year, the most in league history, and was unable to field a full bench for much of the season now must acquire even more depth during the offseason if they want to be challengers for the cup. The Revs also left defenders Joe Franchino, Steve Howey and Carlos Llamosa as well as forward Joe-Max Moore and goalie Adin Brown unprotected, but none were selected and they will remain with the Revs.

The Revs could only protect 12 players for the Expansion Draft and only one senior international player could be left unprotected. With Richie Baker and Felix Brillant becoming senior international players next year the Revs were forced to protect four from their senior internationals that also include Jose Cancela, Avery John and Steve Howey. Although Baker will probably end up in Ireland and Brillant probably isnít going to be kept as he now takes up a senior international spot, the Revs had to protect them over regular starters like Pierce, Kamler and Franchino.

Kamler has been in the league since itís inception in 1996 and won two championships with D.C. United in í96 and í97. Kamler was traded to the Miami Fusion midway through the 1999 season. Kamler stayed with Miami until 2001 when he went back to D.C United. Kamler played one year with D.C. before being sent to the Metrostars, where he was traded to the Revs midway through the 2002 season. In 2003, Kamler recorded career highs with 6 goals and 5 assists for 17 points. Injuries this year limited him to 20 starts and just 2 assists. Kamler did not start any of the Revs playoff games this year. Kamler has been the Revs Humanitarian of the Year since joining the team and was one of their nicest players. After Kamler was selected, the Revs chose to protect Revolution Captain Joe Franchino.

Rusty Pierce has struggled with injuries since joining the Revs, but has been their most solid defender when healthy. He is currently out of contract and is supposedly looking to make a lot more and that may have been factored into the Revs decision to leave him unprotected. This year Pierce became the 5th player in Revolution history to make 100 appearances for the team. Pierce started off as a right back, and eventually moved to center back. He was the Revolutionís Defender of the Year and Midnight Riders (a Revolution supporterís group) Man of the Year in 2000, his rookie season. Pierce played every minute for the Revs this year during the playoffs and was easily the best defender on the team. After Pierce was selected, the Revs choose to protect center back Carlos Llamosa.

With the 4 new roster spots added for next season it will be interesting to see how the Revs can fill in the new holes and add more depth to the team for next season, as well as how the returning veterans who were left unprotected react.
