Americans Abroad – Weekend Preview (01/22/05)
England - Premier League

Southampton vs. Liverpool

Zak Whitbread – Zak (4 games, 4 starts) played well in what was a dismal display by Liverpool at Burnley in the 1-0 loss in the 3rd Round replay of the FA Cup. I would imagine that Rafa Benitez will be starting a full-strength side at St. Mary’s so I don’t expect Zak to be in the gameday 16.

Birmingham vs. Fulham

Carlos Bocanegra & Brian McBride – Carlos (26 games, 25 starts, 1 goal) will probably start in his customary position at left back. Brian (24 games, 9 starts, 3 goals) will probably work off the bench as usual as Chris Coleman has opted to start Andy Cole & Canadian Tomas Radzinski.

Manchester United vs. Aston Villa

Tim Howard & Jonathan Spector – Tim (9W-4D-2L, 11 goals allowed, 6 clean sheets) kept a clean sheet at midweek in a 2-0 victory at Conference side Exeter. Howard will assume his customary spot as understudy for Roy Carroll. Spector (7 games, 4 starts) will probably not make the gameday squad.

West Brom vs. Manchester City

Claudio Reyna – Claudio is still unavailable due to injury.

England - Championship

Plymouth vs. Preston

Eddie Lewis – Eddie (29 games, 27 starts, 4 goals) is available for selection after missing last week’s game against Leicester. I expect him to start as he is one Preston’s top offensive weapons.

Reading vs. Ipswich

Marcus Hahnemann & Bobby Convey – In a game which could potentially field 3 Americans at the same time, Marcus (16W-8D-9L, 31 goals allowed, 12 clean sheets) will definitely be between the pipes. Depending on the formation, if manager Steve Coppell goes with a 4-5-1, we may see Convey (23 games, 7 starts, 0 goals) from the outset. If they play a 4-4-2, will probably see him start the game on the bench. Midfielder Steve Sidwell is out via suspension so there’s always a chance Bobby could play. Convey did start the in the FA Cup 3rd round win at Swansea (1-0) on the 17th making it his 3rd start (1/15 - @Burnley, 1/8 – Swansea (FA Cup)) in a row. This is big game for Reading as Ipswich sit top of the table in the English Championship 9 points ahead of them.

Danny Karbassiyoon – Danny (4 games, 3 starts) continues his run with the Tractor Boys as he is in the matchday squad for Ipswich.

Stoke vs. Leeds

Jay Denny – The youngster is not likely to make the matchday squad for Stoke. Jay has been on the bench for 5 games this season without entering the match. He last made the squad on January 3rd against Burnley. Manager Tony Pulis has hinted that he would like to get the young lads some playing time on loan with lower division clubs so there may be some good news on the horizon for Jay.

Wigan vs. Watford

Jay Demerit – Jay (16 games, 13 starts, 1 goal) has started the last 5 games for Watford. I would expect that he would continue in the starting lineup due to his recent form.

Germany - Bundesliga

Borrusia Monchengladbach vs Arminia Bielefeld

Kasey Keller - Kasey may get the start in this game being recently transferred from Tottenham.

Mainz vs. VfB Stuttgart

Conor Casey – Before the winter break, Conor (17 games, 10 starts, 3 goals) had lost his starting spot. Conor is in the matchday squad and maybe paired with fellow striker Benjamin Auer in the starting lineup.

France - Ligue 1

Bastia vs. Nice

Greg Vanney – Greg (20 games, 19 starts) should be in the starting lineup for Bastia. The Corsican club is in desperate need of a win as they are in the relegation zone just 3 points from being rock bottom.

Holland - Eredivisie

PSV vs. NAC Breda

DaMarcus Beasley – DaMarcus (22 games, 14 starts, 7 goals) is in the squad for PSV for the first game after the winter break. He should be in the starting lineup as the left winger with Jefferson Farfan out with the Chicken Pox.

Belgium - Jupiler League

Charleroi vs. Standard Liege

Oguchi Owenyu – Gooch (23 games, 23 starts, 3 goals) should be in the starting lineup in central defence for Standard Liege against Charleroi on the road. They are coming off a disappointing loss just 3 days ago to Charleroi (1-1, 3-4 in PK’s) in the Belgian Cup. The loss cost manager Cédric Roussel his job.

News and Notes:

Cory Gibbs has signed a 4.5 year deal with Dutch club Feyenoord. The US National Team defender leaves MLS (FC Dallas) after one season returning to Europe. It is rumored that Feyenoord paid approx. $1 million to MLS. He will most likely not be available for this weekend’s match against Vitesse Arnheim as he has yet to obtain a work permit.

Danny Califf is on trial with Norwegian club Vålerenga. The LA Galaxy defender will spend 10 days with the club and could be bought by the club if he impresses. He would be the 5th US player in Norway’s top league ( Robbie Russell – Rosenborg, Adin Brown – Aalesund, Brian West – Fredrikstad, & Ramiro Corrales – HamKam) if things work out for the 5 year MLS veteran.
