Americans Abroad - Cup Edition (1/25/05)
Carling Cup Semifinal - Leg 2

From Vicarage Road

Watford vs Liverpool (0-1) (Liverpool wins 2-0 on aggregate)

Jay Demerit - Jay magical season continues as he starts for the 7th straight match. Demerit came to the rescue 17 minutes in as he was able to head away a cross from Liverpool's John Arne Riise that was headed for Fernando Morientes who was in position to knock it in. At the 43rd minute, Jay's long ball from the back found Neil Ardley but his cross into the box was cleared away by the Reds Djimi Traore. Just after the break, 51 minutes in, Demerit was able to clear a Steven Gerrard cross from a corner kick. Unfortunately for Watford, Steve Gerrard did them in for the 2nd straight game as his 77th minute score put Liverpool up 1-0.

Jay had yet another great performance this evening. The Green Bay native has cemented himself as a fixture on Watford's backline. Demerit started all for cup games against Premier League (Liverpool, Fulham) opponents this January. These performances have to be getting the attention of one Bruce Arena. It won't be a surprise if we see Jay at a USMNT camp this summer.

Wednesday - Carling Cup Semifinal Leg 2

At Old Trafford

Manchester United vs Chelsea (0-0 in the first leg)

Manchester United will probably field as good a side as possible. Though Sir Alex talks as though he will have to rest some players with the congested schedule approaching, I would believe that with Chelsea as the opponents, the likes of Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney & Cristiano Ronaldo will be in the lineup. Tim Howard will be in the matchday squad but I wouldn't be surprised if Roy Caroll got the start. Tim was a little shaky in the match against Exeter last week and the side Chelsea will be putting out there, the gaffer may go for the steadier hand.

Monday Night Football

Blackburn vs Bolton (0-1)

Brad Freidel - The Wanderers escaped with a one goal win at Ewood Park. Bolton's El-Hadji Diouf was given a penalty which was saved by Friedel but Diouf was able to knock home the rebound at the 77 minute mark to provide the game's only goal. The penalty came from what appeared to be a dive from the Senegalese international as Brad was penalized for tripping Diouf. Replays showed that El-Hadji Diouf was not even touched. Blackburn had the better part of the play for the majority of the match but came up empty on this night.

Brad's 4 game unbeaten stretch came to an end in this game. It seems that Blackburn has responded very well to the appointment of former Wales manager Mark Hughes. Since October 30th, Rovers have lost just 3 times in 16 games.

From Ligue 1 (France) 01/26/05

Auxerre vs Bastia

Greg Vanney - Greg should be back in the lineup for Bastia in what continues to be a disappointing season for the Corsicans. Bastia have not won on the road this season and have just 3 points from 10 games. They currently sit just outside the relegation slots in Ligue 1.

Current rumors:

It seems that Kerry Zavagnin is on trial with Sunderland of the English League Championship. Sunderland sit 3rd in the league just one spot away from automatic promotion. Manager Mick McCarthy is looking to strengthen his side for the stretch run and Kerry would be a good fit. I'm not sure if Kerry has made enough appearances for the US to qualify for a work permit but there's talk that he may be able to acquire an Irish passport thereby getting around that problem.
