Deja vu all over again?
The Colorado Rapids home opener seemed to be all to familiar. A home game that ended in a goalless draw bears resemblance to a Hankinson result. The squad did show both some strong points, and short comings.

Despite the less than exciting result, there were some positive qualities that came from this result. Major consideration must be accounted for due to the fact that the Rapids were missing no less than 3 major players from their lineup. Pablo, Pedro, and Cunningham where all kept out of action because of lingering injuries, and their absence was reflected in the teams performance.

Probably their largest issue was the center midfield. Beckerman and Nkong started out in the middle. It is fair to say that they were disorganized. Nkong was average and Beckerman never seemed to pass the ball forward. They where especially gun shy around the 18 yard box. They were nothing special defensively either. The majority of attacks from Dallas came down the middle, which didn't have much trouble until they came against the Rapids back line. For Beckerman's and Nkong's sake, I hope they were having an "off" day. Pablo will greatly improve the middle defensively, but any change offensively will remain unknown.

The strikers were the most visible issue. Wolde and Gonzalez started up top. Neither where very inspiring. They did, however, show effort and a desire to win. Wolde, particularly, showed that he can be a workhorse offensively. He, on occasion, was not on the same page as the rest of the team, but that was not always his fault. He nearly managed to get a goal in a 1v1 situation, but Scott Garlick won the day for Dallas. I expect the attack to greatly improve if Cunningham and Perdo can get healthy. I believe it will be the least of concerns, at least in comparison to the center midfield.

The team's play did present some pleasant surprises. The Rapids were very strong on the wings. Chung and Henderson both had solid games. Eric Denton played the left wing later in the match. He had a few good moments, but also a few blunders. Colorado's most dangerous chances came from wide left and right. If the Rapids had a few more big players (Pedro and co.) in the box, we might have seen a few goals. The wings were also effective on the defense and helped keep Ronnie O'Brien in check. This kind of focus on the wings is something that we rarely saw with last years team.

The Defense also played well. I don't think many expected this young back line to keep the Johnson/Ruiz combo at bay. Dallas did get a little to close for comfort a few times, but I think inexperience was the biggest factor in that respect. When the defense was broken, Cannon was thankfully their most of the time. Bazooka Joe made some great saves, but on occasion was a little shaky with his distribution. The Rapids look to be in decent shape on the defensive end of the field. A clean sheet result is ideal.

The result was a little disappointing and all too familiar. However, considering the constraints in the lineup, I think they did rather well. A scoreless draw is not bad, but its not great either. I think its realistic to believe that they will do better in the future. Hopefully Colorado will have Cunningham, Pedro, and Pablo healthy for the first Real Salt Lake match.
