Revolution win again, beat Metrostars 4-2
Foxboro, MA. – The New England Revolution won their ninth game of the season on Saturday in exciting fashion. After getting out to an early lead, the Revs gave up two goals and fell into a 2-1 whole. They came back scoring three goals in the last eighteen minutes to win the match 4-2 and improve their record to 9-1-4.

Jose Cancela got the Revs off to a dream start with his first goal of the season, just 22 seconds into the match. Clint Dempsey headed the ball back to Cancela, who was about 25 yards out from goal. Cancela sent a looping shot over the head of Metrostars’ ‘keeper Zach Wells, who had drifted a little off his line.

Three minutes later, Clint Dempsey beat Wells with a hard shot from the top of the box, but saw his effort bounce off the post and back into play.

Cassio, making just his second start of the season, forced Wells into a diving save with his shot intended for the upper right hand corner of the net.

Despite going into half-time with a 1-0 lead, coach Steve Nicol decided to make two changes to the squad. Andy Dorman was subbed in for Jose Cancela and James Riley was inserted into the game in place of Cassio.

US Under-20 International Eddie Gaven entered the game for the Metrostars in place of Mike Magee in the 66th minute. Gaven would lead the Metrostars offense for the rest of the game.

Just one minute later, the Metrostars earned a penalty kick, when Andy Dorman took down Sergio Galvan Rey from behind in the box. Youri Djorkaeff stepped up and sent the penalty to Matt Reis’ right. Reis got a hand to it, but couldn’t prevent it from entering the net, tying the game at 1-1.

Sergio Galvan Rey gave the Metrostars the lead just a minute later, when he got free of the Revolution defense. Rey then got on the end of an Eddie Gaven cross and redirected it past Matt Reis from close range to give the Metrostars a 2-1 lead.

Jay Heaps tied the score at two in the 72nd minute, when he rose above everyone in the box to get on the end of an Andy Dorman corner kick. Heaps headed it past Wells for his first goal of the season.

New England took the lead in the 86th minute when Steve Ralston stole the ball from defender Jeff Parke and scored. Parke seemed to be expecting a foul when he knocked over Clint Dempsey, but none was given. As Parke dribbled carelessly, Ralston ran in and stole the ball before sending a shot to the far side of the net that beat Wells.

As the match wore on the Metrostars pressed forward and the Revs broke free on the counter attack. Pat Noonan received the ball 35 yards from goal and caught Wells off his line, before chipping a shot over him and into the back of the net.

"We got outplayed for 70 minutes," said Head Coach Steve Nicol after the match. "The goals were an accumulation of being under pressure. We finally started playing with 20 minutes to go."

The win left the Revs in first place in the East, 8 points up on the Chicago Fire, prior to their match tonight, with a game in hand. The Revs next travel to Los Angeles to face the Galaxy on July 4th at 10:00 PM.
