Depleted Revs fall to Fire
Chicago, Ill. – The New England Revolution suffered just their second loss of the season, falling 1-0 to the Chicago Fire. New England were without Pat Noonan, Steve Ralston, Clint Dempsey and Avery John due to Gold Cup call-ups as well as Shalrie Joseph due to yellow card accumulation. Chicago were without Tony Sanneh, Chris Armas, Samuel Caballero and Ivan Guerrero due to Gold Cup call-ups. After a fairly even first half that was marred by poor passing, Chicago took over for the last 45 minutes and managed to get the goal they needed for the win.

Chicago had several dangerous chances and goalkeeper Matt Reis kept the Revs in the game with some spectacular saves that earned him man of the match honors. Reis and the Revs defense kept Chicago at bay until the 58th minute, when CJ Brown headed a Jesse Marsch corner kick to Gonzalo Segares. The rookie settled the ball before sending it past a diving Reis and Revs defender at the post for his third goal of the season.

Chicago had a chance to double their lead in the 62st minute, when a penalty kick was called for Marshall Leonard impeding Justin Mapp’s run into the box. Lubos Reiter stepped up to take the penalty, and sent it hard to Matt Reis’ right. Reis made a spectacular diving save, but received a yellow card for yelling at the referee afterwards.

The Revs had their best chance of the game in the 88th minute, when Connally Edozien sent a hard header marked for the upper corner of the net after a flurry in the box. Zach Thornton was equal to it though, and made a spectacular save, his only of the match.

The Revs, 9-2-5, are now second place in the East behind the Fire. Chicago, however have played three more games than the Revs and have three more losses.
