Revs crush Salt Lake with 4-1 win
Foxboro, MA. – The New England Revolution ran out easy winners against Expansion side Real Salt Lake, putting 4 goals on the board to grab a large win. The Revolution dominated their first ever match against Real Salt Lake. The Salt Lake squad featured 5 former Revolution players in Brian Kamler, Rusty Pierce, Andy Williams, Chris Brown and Brian Dunseth.

The Revs took the lead in the 11th minute, when defender Jay Heaps beat his man and sent a cross into the box that Clint Dempsey headed home for his 7th goal of the season.

Five minutes later the Revs doubled their lead when Heaps headed a Jose Cancela corner kick towards goal. Taylor Twellman headed it past goalie DJ Countess for his 10th goal of the season.

The Revs had a chance to add to their lead two minutes later, when a long ball from Shalrie Joseph sprung Steve Ralston free from the defense. Ralston’s shot from close range hit off the crossbar and Twellman’s shot off the rebound was saved by a diving Countess.

Michael Parkhurst was forced to clear a shot off the line in the 30th minute, when Jason Kreis managed to beat goalie Matt Reis with a shot.

Kreis brought Real Salt Lake back within one a minute later, when he sent a free kick into the lower left corner of the box from just outside the 18 yard box.

Steve Ralston should’ve restored the two goal lead a minute later, when he broke free in the box. Ralston hesitated 6 yards from goal, allowing Kenny Cutler to get back and clear it over the line.

Joe Franchino broke free in the box in the 58th minute and sent a pass across the goalmouth towards the path of Andy Dorman. Dorman however, somehow didn’t connect and missed what would have been a sure goal.

The Revs had two great chances in the 62nd minute, First, Twellman’s back pass put Jay Heaps through on goal, but his close range shot was saved. Then Heaps sent in a perfect cross to Twellman, who headed it on target, but again DJ Countess was there to save it.

The Revs third goal finally came in the 76th minute when Heaps headed an Andy Dorman corner kick on target. Brian Dunseth tried to head it out, but instead headed it into his own net.

Khano Smith put the game out of reach in the 90th minute after intercepting a poor clearance. Smith ran to the left side of the box before sending in a long range blast that beat Countess for just his second goal as a member of the Revs.

“We would have preferred to put the game away earlier,” said Head Coach Steve Nicol after the match. We were coasting at two-nil and we stopped doing things that we were doing well. We just had to be on our guard. As long as we concentrated and kept plugging away, we were confident we would get another goal. Unfortunately, it took us a wee bit longer than we hoped, but nonetheless we got it.”
