US defeat Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup Qualifying
East Hartford, CT. - The US beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 on Wednesday August 17th, and guaranteed that they would finish no worse than 4th place in the final stage of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying with 4 matches still left to play. The top 3 teams automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the 4th place team will go into a play-off with a team from Asia. The US are currently second in the standings with 15 points, one behind Mexico and eight above the third and fourth place teams.

The US took the lead under 2 minutes in when Bobby Convey made a run up the left flank and sent a pass across the goal mouth to Brian McBride, who slid in to knock it into the back of the net. The goal was McBride’s tenth in World Cup Qualifying, moving him to first in that category for the US in All-Time World Cup Qualifying.

"Basically it was good ball movement,” said McBride after the match. “Bobby (Convey) ran off a shoulder and was played in and I knew I just had to beat the guy to the spot. The angle that he was at, he was going to play the ball across. It was a nice ball in, and I just had to open up my foot."

The US continued to create great chances, but poor finishing and good goalkeeping from
Kelvin Jack kept the US from scoring again.

Landon Donovan should’ve doubled the lead in the 29th minute, when a pass from Kelvin Jack fell right to Donovan. Alone on goal, Donovan sent his shot right at the ‘keeper for an easy save.

Convey, who led the attack all day, had a great chance ten minutes later, when he broke free on goal. His shot, however, was wide of the mark.

T&T’s hope of a comeback took a great hit just before half time, when Marvin Andrews misplayed a back pass and it was intercepted by Donovan. Andrews pulled on Donovan and was ejected as a result.

Taylor Twellman seemed to have finally given the US a two goal lead in the 86th minute, when he sent home a cross from Santino Quaranta. His goal was disallowed on an offside call. Replays seemed to show Twellman was onside.

The playing field was leveled in the 88th minute, when Convey was ejected after receiving his second yellow card. T&T put on more offensive pressure, but were unable to create any dangerous opportunities.

The US next faces Mexico on September 3rd in Columbus, Ohio.
