Revolution fall 2-0 to Rapids, lose two players to suspension for next game
DENVER, CO. – The Revolution’s struggles in Denver continued on Wednesday as the first place Revoultion fell 2-0 to the struggling Colorado Rapids. Missing their usual starting strikers Taylor Twellman and Pat Noonan, to a US National Team call-up and an ankle injury, respectively, head coach Steve Nicol opted to play a defensive 4-5-1 formation with Clint Dempsey starting alone up top. Also out due to injury was back-up forward Connally Edozien, which could’ve influenced the decision to make the formation change. Missing due to national team duty were Steve Ralston (USA) and Avery John (Trinidad and Tobago), while Colorado were without Jeff Cunningham (USA).

Colorado looked the stronger team throughout the match and out-shot the Revs 18 to 4, but failed to convert their chances until late in the match. The Revs did start off brightly forcing Joe Cannon into a save with a Joe Franchino free kick in the 6th minute, but it was all Rapids after that.

Luchi Gonzalez forced Revs ‘keeper Matt Reis into a save with a shot from close range in the 15th minute.

The Revs second and last show on target came in the 30th minute when Dempsey stole the ball from Kyle Beckerman and forced Joe Cannon into a diving save with his shot to the far post.

Alain Nkong should’ve given the Rapids the lead 5 minutes later. Nkong, unmarked 6 yards from goal, got on the end of a Terry Cooke header, but sent it high of the net.

Colorado continued to pressure in the second half, but poor shooting kept them off the scoresheet until the 78th minute. Eric Denton passed the ball back to Nkong just outside the box, who sent a shot out of the reach of Reis and into the back of the net.

Colorado put the game out of reach 6 minutes later, when Fabrice Noel broke free of the Revolution defense. Jay Heaps tried to foul him outside the box, but was unable to, setting up a one-on-one against Matt Reis. Reis shoved him to the ground and was immediately shown a red card and a penalty kick was given to Colorado. Back-up keeper Doug Warren came on for Jose Cancela and took over in goal, but was unable to stop Jean Philippe Peguero’s penalty.

Up a man, Colorado had an easy time holding onto the lead in the last minutes of the game.

Clint Dempsey and Matt Reis will both miss the Revs next match through suspension. Dempsey received a yellow card in the game and his suspension comes from yellow card accumulation.
