Revs held to a scoreless draw by Red Bulls
The New York Red Bulls’ home opener will likely be more remembered for pre-game and halftime festivities than the game itself. The new ownership of the New York franchise went all out to make the game an exciting event, honoring former greats of New York’s soccer past, including Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer, in a pre-game ceremony and bringing in Shakira and Wyclef Jean to perform at halftime. The match itself, while a lively affair, was marred by poor finishing on both sides.

With US internationals Taylor Twellman, Clint Dempsey and Pat Noonan leading the Revs three-pronged attack and former French international Youri Djorkaeff as well as former MLS MVP Amado Guevara and newly acquired Edson Buddle, the match was expected to be high scoring. It was the goalkeepers who stole the show with the Revs’ Matt Reis and the Red Bulls’ Tony Meola both making several key saves that along with some uncharacteristic shooting from the proven scorers on both sides, kept the match scoreless.

Just ten minutes in the Revs had a chance when Joe Franchino sent a free kick into the box. Twellman beat his man, but sent the ball over the net from just six yards out.

Nineteen minutes later the Revs had another chance when reigning team MVP Shalrie Joseph sprung Twellman free of the defense with a well timed through ball. As Meola rushed out, Twellman was forced wide and his cross was out of the reach of Dempsey.

Seconds later, Buddle almost gave the Red Bulls the lead when his shot from 30 yards rattled off the post. Reis was rooted to the spot when the shot came in and did not even make an attempt to get to it.

The Red Bulls should’ve taken the lead in a counter attack in the 41st minute. Off a Revolution corner kick, the Red Bulls cleared out the ball to Buddle, who sent a perfect pass to Chris Henderson. Henderson then stormed in alone into the penalty area and found himself one-on-one with Reis, but somehow missed the net completely, and sent the ball wide of the far post.

In the second half, New York began putting more pressure on the Revs. The Revs’ defense gave the Red Bulls ample opportunity to take the lead by giving up reckless fouls just outside of their own penalty area. Luckily for the Revs, New York wasted countless opportunities.

Twellman had perhaps the Revs best chance of the game in the 76th minute. Twellman received the ball off a Noonan pass inside the penalty area with space to work with, but somehow slipped and sent the ball wide of the post.
With time running out, the final chance fell to the Red Bulls. Amado Guevara sent a dipping shot from outside the box marked for just under the cross bar at the Revs goal. Reis made a leaping save to deny Guevara and preserve the shutout.

The Revs, undefeated after two road games, have yet to be scored on in 180 minutes of play so far this season. However, offensively the Revs have only tallied one goal in their last 5 competitive matches. The Revs switch to a 3-4-3 formation has yet to produce the expected offense, but with forwards such as Noonan, Dempsey and Twellman leading the attack, it can only be a matter of time before they start scoring.
