Revolution Defeat Defending Champs 4-0
The Revolution offense exploded against the Galaxy after scoring only two goals through all of April. Shalrie Joseph scored twice, while Taylor Twellman and Steve Ralston each added one. Jose Cancela earned man of the match honors for his assists on two of the goals and a shot that led to a third. The win was the second of the season for the Revs, with both coming against the Galaxy.

Just five minutes in Twellman gave the Revs the lead. Twellman started the attack by sending Cancela free of the defense with a through pass. Cancela’s shot was saved by goalie Kevin Hartman, but tipped right to Twellman at the top of the box, who sent it into the empty net for his second goal of the season.

Twellman, who found out earlier in the week that he was not included in the USA’s initial 23 man roster for the World Cup, also lost his grandfather, former professional baseball player Jim Delsing on Thursday. Steve Ralston, goalie Matt Reis and injured forward Pat Noonan were also left off the roster and named as alternates along with Twellman, while Clint Dempsey was the lone player named to the initial roster.

“A lot of it has been my family, and it’s a tribute to my grandfather,” said Twellman of how he got through the week. “He’s the one that set the bar for the family…even my father will tell you he’s the one that set the bar. The guy played 19 years professionally and you talk to him and its like talking to an average Joe. I only hope I’m half the man he was.”

The Galaxy were extremely lucky to not go down a man and another goal in the 12th minute, when Twellman broke free in the box. Ugo Ihmehelu slipped when covering Twellman and then used his hand to deflect Twellman’s shot to Hartman for an easy save. The blatant hand ball somehow went unseen by the referee.

Dempsey came close to making it 2-0 seven minutes later, when he dribbled into the 6 yard box after receiving the ball on a throw in and shot from a tight angle. His shot beat Hartman, but hit the far post and bounced clear.

Daniel Hernandez went down with an ankle injury around the 20th minute and was subbed out for Tony Lochhead a few minutes later. Lochhead moved to left wing, while Andy Dorman moved into center midfield and Ralston returned to his normal spot on the right wing.

The Revs put the ball in the back of the net in the 29th minute when a deflected shot bounced into the air. Dempsey and Twellman challenged Hartman for it and the ball rolled into the back of the net, but the Revs were judged to have fouled Hartman.

Steve Ralston finally doubled the Revs lead in the 39th minute. Ralston joined the rest of the Revs in the box as Cancela lined up to take a free kick from near the side of the box, but then quickly went out to the top of the box, where Cancela passed it to him unmarked. Ralston’s shot took a deflection off Tyrone Marshall on the way in, but ended up in the lower left corner for Ralston’s first goal of the season.

“We worked on that actually before the game on the training pitch a few times and it’s never worked,” said Ralston. “For some reason this team decided to give it a try tonight and see what happens and it finally came off.”

A Cancela free kick set up the Revs next goal just four minutes later. From the right flank, Cancela sent a long cross into the box, where an unmarked Shalrie Joseph easily got to it and headed it past Hartman for his first goal of the season.

Just one minute later Cancela was free of the defense with a chance of his own on a nice through ball by Clint Dempsey. Cancela’s shot was blocked by a sliding Tyrone Marshall.

Landon Donovan had the Galaxy’s best chance of the match just before halftime, when he received the ball inside the Revolution box. Donovan turned to shoot, but fired just wide of the net.

Donovan forced Matt Reis into a save in the 63rd minute as his close range header off a Chris Albright cross was headed for the back of the net. Reis managed to tip the ball over the crossbar.

The Revs killed any chance of a Galaxy comeback in the 68th minute, when Chris Albright took down Taylor Twellman in the box. The referee blew for a penalty kick and Shalrie Joseph stepped up to take it. Joseph hammered it into the lower left corner of the net, leaving Hartman with no chance.

“I said all along that it was a matter of time before we put the ball in the net,” Head Coach Steve Nicol said after the match. “I said it to the players before the game. We moved the ball better. This week we moved the ball quickly and they really couldn’t close it down. When we do that, teams are going to find it really hard to close down. Even when we went one up, we were relentless, we kept coming forward. When you’re only one goal ahead, anything can happen."

The win was the Revs biggest ever against the Galaxy and it marked the first time ever that the Revs had swept the season series with the Galaxy.

Other Notes: Before the game it was announced that former Rev and US National Team player Alexi Lalas would be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame this year along with former US Women’s National Team star Carla Overbeck…Khano Smith and Jose Cancela both received Green Cards in the past two weeks meaning neither will count as Senior Internationals on the Revs roster any longer.
