Scottish Champs impressed by MLS
Foxboro, MA. - Glasgow Celtic, the defending Scottish Premier League Champions, opted to spend part of their preseason in the US, where they faced two Major League Soccer teams. Celtic started their trip with a 4-0 loss to D.C. United on July 12th, who currently reside in first place in MLS. They then played Chivas de Guadalajara (Mexico) to a scoreless tie on July 14th, before drawing 1-1 with the New England Revolution on July 19th despite being outplayed.

Celtic Head Coach Gordon Strachan spoke favorably of the players and teams he faced. “They looked good,” said Strachan. “There are some good teams here. They are good sides and set a good standard. They would be a good standard throughout the rest of the world I would imagine.” He also showed interest in bringing some MLS players to Celtic should the situation be right. “A lot of them are quite good,” the former Scottish International said. “I would [hire an American player] if we had the finances to do that.”

It was not just Strachan who noticed the quality. Midfielder Stillian Petrov agreed about the league. "In America, they proved they are playing good football,” said Petrov, who has recently talked of leaving Celtic for the English Premier League. “They are making a very good improvement. If they keep working that way, [they have a] good future." When asked about a future move to MLS, he wouldn’t count it out. "You never know, I’m still 27,” Petrov said. “I got a great impression of the MLS because they try to improve the league all the time."
